Family Tree Maker 2008 Import Instructions
The Family Tree Maker 2008 import will work this way:
  1. This is assuming you have Family Tree Maker 2008 already installed on your computer and that you already have a Passage Express "Family Tree Maker Version" license (free upon request, no need to reinstall any software, just change your Passage Express license number).

  2. Make sure you have the update for Family Tree Maker. You must have a Family Tree Maker license or it won’t recognize that it should download the Family Tree Maker files. Send an email request to ftm@passageexpress.com and ask for the FTM license.

  3. Do a Check for Updates. Find the “Updates” by clicking the Help drop-down menu. If the update process warns you that Passage Express is open and running, just “reach behind” the updates window and click on the Passage Express window and close it down. This only happens when the main program is being replaced and not just a component.

  4. After updating, temporarily open Passage Express. With doing this, it will copy the necessary files over into the Family Tree Maker 2008 folders which in turn will show Passage Express as a “Plug-in”.

  5. Close Passage Express. Passage Express should be closed in order for FTM 2008 to restart it with your import.

  6. Close FTM 2008 if it is already open, then open it into your family file (To give it a chance to recognize the new plugin). Click on the Tools drop-down menu, Plugins, Export with Plugin, and then click Passage Express.

  7. If you don’t see the Plugin within FTM 2008, then check out the information below.
If you didn’t see the plugin in FTM 2008:
Here is what happens when you set up the plugin for FTM 2008:
The update will load the following FTM files into C:\Program Files\Passage Express:
(This is assuming you have installed the two software into the regular default folders.}
- Import Family Tree Maker.exe   (This is an ‘application type file. The exe part of the file name may not display on some computers)
- PEPluginFTM2008.DLL (This file tells FTM 2008 that there is a plugin)
- Passage.exe should be of a recent date, November 28, 2007 or later.
- A file gets created in C:\Program Files\Family Tree Maker 2008\plugins called PassageExpressPlugin.xml.

If you do not see these files, repeat the steps 4 thru 7 above and try it again. Remember to close and reopen both PE and FTM 2008 after installing the update.

If you do not see the files above, then make sure you have your FTM license installed within Passage Express. You should see the "Import from Family Tree Maker" button on the main Passage Express window. You should also be able to click "About" on the help drop-down menu and see Family Tree Maker listed if you are registered with a Family Tree Maker version. Send an email to ftm@passageexpress.com to request the FTM license.

For those interested, the PassageExpressPlugin.xml file contains this information that allows Family Tree Maker 2008 to find the plugin:
   name="PassageExpressPlugin"
   description="Import Data into Passage Express Software"
   active="true"
   location="C:\Program Files\Passage Express\"
   dll="PEPluginFTM2008.DLL"/>
